For Fall, 2017, Marcus was invited once again to be lead Art Director for Garnet Hill overseeing two amazing teams, which included Photographers Seth Smoot and Maura McEvoy.

It’s always a great experience to head north and work in Exeter / New Hampshire where Garnet Hill is based. Portsmouth, is the most local largest town and full of great places to eat, shop and take in the sights.

For the Fall Season, Marcus was asked to take into account the Fashion section of the Garnet Hill Catalog that was shot in Scotland, weaving in the faintest influence of this in the Home and Linen side of the company.  If you look closely you can see this influence especially through the windows of each of the sets.

Working with set builder extraordinaire Matt Carstens and his team, Marcus and the crew worked with beautiful sets that changed for every scheme. Amazing Prop Stylist Carin Scheve and Soft Stylist Eduardo Vinueza sealed the deal for an amazing team.

For Williams Sonoma, Marcus was excited to join the team to work with Michael Mina, Michael Mina is an award-winning chef, restaurateur and cookbook author whose name has been synonymous with bold food and memorable dining for more than two decades. He is the creator of Michael Mina, his signature restaurant in San Francisco, CA. In 2002, along with partner Andre Agassi, he founded Mina Group, which today includes nearly 30 dining concepts, including Bardot Brasserie in Las Vegas, Stonehill Tavern in Southern California and the forthcoming Margeaux Brasserie in Chicago. His new collection of seasonings and relishes are inspired by the creations he serves at Bourbon Pub in Santa Clara, CA, a gathering place where he puts his spin on classic pub fare.

Also that week we photographed some amazing cocktail and outdoor kitchen spreads, really getting into the spirit of Summer.

Images here are photographed by the wonderful Anson Smart. Food Styling and mean burger wrangling by George Dolese.

For the February Catalog, Design Within Reach has put out an amazing catalog featuring portraits of some of the designers whose designs they carry. Marcus had styled some of these interior only shots in each spread featuring their work over the course of a year or two for the Connecticut based company.

Often on a shoot, Photographer Jim Bastardo will see different angles and details we can shoot on each of the products and by simply changing this viewpoint we have a selection of brand new shots, often these shots are in the vault until the opportunity arises such as this to feature them, It’s always a wonderful thing to see!

It’s great that a company will strive to show the face behind modern design and lively black and white shots capture that celebration and achievement.

We continue the Williams Sonoma Thanksgiving vibe by sharing with you some more of the evocative images that were created for this years Thanksgiving and Fall catalog. Marcus who styled these shots got to work with some amazing Photographers and Food Stylists once again for the iconic brand.

In his usual graphic style Marcus was able to make these sets of carving and steak knives jump off the page by using a series of wooden boards, stone bowls and slate. The rich and inciting world of Thanksgiving continues working with the amazing Food Stylist Alison Attenborough working on a buffet that would make any host proud.

These images were shot by SF native Erin Kunkel and Australian Sharyn Cairns

For the Williams Sonoma Fall Catalog, 2016, Marcus for SMH, Inc was once again in San Francisco to work on iconic spreads for the season. Thanksgiving is around the corner and this year found us in many different locations around the Bay area to shoot the spreads assigned. We got to shoot with a number of different and wonderful Photographers: Sharyn Cairns, Anders Schonnemann and Anson Smart to name a few. It was a great experience to be with new teams and be a part of creating a visual language for the season for Willams Sonoma.

This Fall we embraced feathers, leather string, crafted copper dipped tags, clever and unexpected table setting ideas and seasonal fauna. Taking a more relaxed casual take mixed with more traditional items of product, We were conscious to give the season a more personal approach, less traditional and uptight. We hope you enjoy the results.

For the August Catalog for Williams Sonoma, Marcus was asked to style these very chic monochromatic spread's. Working with a new Provence black serve ware, he created a butler's pantry style shot using all pieces from the new range which are all hand painted.

Other shots included new kitchen tool accessories and steak knife sets shot with their matching boxes. Staples for the brand.

Working with the very talent Photographer Anson Smart we had a great week including shots to be featured in September's Catalog and the following months. Look out for those!

This Pre-Fall for CB2, Marcus made the journey to Chicago for a few weeks to work on the latest catalog that is out now. It’s hard to believe but all these amazing rooms were created in the studio from scratch working with the amazing set builders using a lot of reclaimed pieces found in salvage yards and shops around Chicago.

The focus this season revolved around a number of themes including West Coast Casual, Vintage Italian Modern, Gentleman’s Quarters and Luxe Minimalism.  These were perfect themes for Marcus, He says: “ Italian Gio Ponti is one of my favorite masters of design so I was super excited with the theme Vintage Italian Modern, I couldn’t help but reference him and draw inspiration from his approach to design”

CB2 have a wonderful collection of new pieces of furniture and decorative pieces so it was a real pleasure to be able to work with these silhouettes”

For the May mini catalog for Design With Reach, Studio Marcus Hay, Inc was delighted to see some "locked in the bank" images emerge that have been shot on previous shoots and have been saved for this special catalog.

Also other images and new crops can be seen on the site itself of the George Nelson series we shot recently plus other details, As much work goes into these shots as any other so we love to see them featured, These includes photography we produced ourselves at the studio for the shoot in the way of art seen on the walls which we specially framed.

Studio Marcus Hay, Inc is about to embark on another project for DWR next week, we look forward to working with the team again including Jim Bastardo, whose work is featured here.

Late last year, Marcus of SMH, Inc was asked to join the Garnet Hill team in New Hampshire to be lead Art Director over 2 teams. Marcus has Art Directed for them before but this was the first time as lead. An incredible amount of work goes into the planning of these catalogs and what you see here is just a taste, having shot enough shots to cover 3 or 4 drops over the Spring and Summer seasons. It was a very exciting project .

Marcus spent almost an entire creative week In New York at the studio before heading up to New Hampshire, planning the approach the 2 teams would take to over 50 different looks giving each Garnet Hill design it’s own distinct look based on the look or feel of each design. Working closely with the talented merchants and designers of the product, Marcus had a series of meetings where he presented his ideas and worked through the merchandising of the product in each shot. Every little detail is planned out, right down to what style of bed, lamp and rugs will be used in combination for each shot.

Working with the talented set builder Casey Maroon from Maroon Design Works we created a number of amazing configurations of sets that would work over the two teams.

It literally takes an army to create these catalogs and while Marcus was working directly with a more nuclear team on the week of the shoot, Marcus was also overseeing the other team lead by Art Director Katrine Hansen who did an wonderful job and was such a pleasure to work with.

The shots above are the shots Marcus directed, some of these are preview images only featured online at www.garnethill.com currently in their favorite spaces section but we will feature them again in their full crops later down the track as they are emerge in the actual catalog.

Look out for these soon.

The images above are shot by one of our favorite Photographer's Seth Smoot, We were excited to work again with magical Stylist's Carin Scheve (Props) and Eduardo Vinueza (Soft Styling)

CB2 / Holidays, 2015

It's Holidays again in catalog world and what is a better one to start with than CB2. Studio Marcus Hay, Inc has just completed its round of Holiday shoots and have promptly moved onto Spring but right now as the weather cools and we had into the season of celebration, it seems appropriate to finally embrace this for real.
