Curio, A Visionary Space

Curio, A Visionary Space

Working in the hectic yet wonderful world of advertising and graphic design, Art Director and Stylist Marcus Hay feels there is still the need for a space to explore and discover new ways of composing imagery.

Curio came about as the result of Marcus's deep desire to bring together talented creatives, providing a space where they can produce fresh editorial images outside the purview of their commercial assignments. Guided by Marcus's vision, Curio features a new story every few months, that promotes a thirst for knowledge and exploration.

With a sharp eye for style, Marcus takes the idea of a "curio cabinet" – where treasures and beautiful objects are artfully displayed – to present the unique wonders of the world around us in new and interesting ways. Within this curio cabinet, they can be rediscovered through the theme of each issue, ready for a new life.

New York Stories 4 / Wren Sakura

Wren Sakura grew up in Syracuse, New York. As a teenager she moved to Manhattan with her Japanese father and Virginia-born mother, when he was relocated for work.

Her passion for birds started at a young age, when she would go bird watching with her parents in the Catskills, where they had a weekend cabin. She lives in an apartment on the Lower East Side where she likes to explore her passion for birds, potted plants, and all things natural.

Working at a Japanese bookstore, Wren spends her weekends upstate or at The Natural History Museum, where she has been a member for 45 years. Childlike and spirited, she is often mistaken for someone much younger than her years.

New York Stories are inspired by the eccentric older women of New York. Imagining the interiors of these fictional characters, we explore how they came to move to the city, and the objects that tell their story.

New York Stories 3 / Ophelia Sable Le Blanc

Ophelia Sable Le Blank grew up in Oak Park. Her desire to live in a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright spurred on an interest in architecture at a young age.

With dreams of attending architecture school, she instead settled in New York, attracted to the mood of the ‘60s. Her jet black bob and big charcoal eyes made an impression at a fashion magazine where she began working in the Art Department, building her way up to the esteemed position of Director.

Now partly retired, she still dabbles in design, holding classes at a prominent design school. She likes her coffee black and her cocktails strong. You might see her signature black bowler hat make an appearance when the mood is upon her.

New York Stories 2 / Goldie Rose Smyth

Goldie Rose is a lady who grew up in Sunnyvale, Texas. Moving to NYC in the ‘70s with chiseled beauty and larger than life brassy hair. She quickly found a job as a secretary at a busy law firm.

Not much of a traveler, but an avid trinket collector. Still single in her late sixties, with a love of coffee, donuts and her menthol cigarettes. When the weather is nice she likes to roller skate in Central Park on Sundays. Cooling off with lemon and watermelon, that keeps her svelte figure in shape.

New York Stories 1 / Edna Indigo Greenleaf

Edna Indigo Greenleaf lives in the West Village. Originally from the Midwest, with Scandinavian and Greek heritage. Working perhaps in Academia, she has lived in the same rent-stabilized apartment for decades.

A well-travelled woman with a love of photography and botanicals, who lives surrounded by the treasures of her travels. A lady of another era with eclectic tastes, who you might see walking down the street in bright blue bloomer pants and exotic beads.
